“It is our responsibility to make it possible for our emerging leaders to better understand the world we share, and to engage others to do so, before we start trying to change it.”
- Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen
Vice President, Arcadia University
For over 60 years, the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad has provided students with the tools they need to ensure that study abroad is one of their most rewarding and resonant educational experiences. Currently, Arcadia offers over 100 fully accredited undergraduate programs in 14 countries around the world, as well as internships, field research, and service learning opportunities, for a semester, summer, or academic year. The Center for Education Abroad ensures that all its study abroad programming is academically rigorous, experientially rich and culturally immersive. In order to achieve this goal, Arcadia delivers expert guidance, host country support and co-curricular opportunities, along with the University’s complete academic oversight, including program review and transcripts.
In order to advance our global vision, Arcadia University is committed to integrity and transparency in its practices and delivery of programs. As a degree-granting institution, Arcadia University is held to the accreditation standards of the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The university’s Undergraduate Academic Programs Committee regularly reviews all the courses taught overseas in the university’s name, and we undergo periodic accreditation reviews that include our international commitments. Members of the Board of Trustees of the university visit one of our program countries every 18 months. In addition, members of our National Advisory Board engage in rigorous site visits to evaluate our programs and services. The Center for Education Abroad at Arcadia University regularly engages in its own critical review of best practices and procedures as a part of its on-going effort to improving quality and performance.
The world is a smaller and smaller place, with distinct opportunities for today’s students to make a difference for generations to come. With that in mind, in 2009 the Center for Education Abroad is placing a spotlight on the theme of Global Leadership as we introduce our Life of the Mind Series. In conjunction with host country staff and partners, Arcadia is implementing a comprehensive program of events, lectures, excursions, and opportunities, aimed at helping students understand the importance of defining their roles in tomorrow’s world.
Study abroad by its very nature challenges students to look below the surface of the culture in which they’re studying. Through this unforgettable experience, students gain an understanding of themselves, their own country, and the wider international community that will enlighten and empower them. By expanding their global awareness, students discover ways to take on their own challenges, and those of the world, in a brand new way.
Arcadia is committed to developing programs that help students reflect on what it means to become citizens of the world. Whether that expanding of personal horizons is gained through our programs in London, Paris, Rome, Arusha, or Barcelona, to name but a few – the value of their experiences remains with students long after the ink on the postcards fades. Global education brings richness, depth, and understanding to their careers and their attitudes about the world we live in.
